SPRING / SUMMER 2021 TRENDS

COTTAGE CORE

The desire to explore the outdoors encourages a cottage-inspired life. Olive and Orchid Hush are used in smock-tiered dresses, criss-cross backings, and patchwork clothing. Ulia Johnson’s quilted coats and Marc Jacobs’ folklore have popularized this high-summer mood.

STEEZY DOES IT

Styling-made-easy, “steezy,” 70’s revival continues to play out through retro floral prints, denim flares, and a heavy emphasis on crochet knits. Old-school skater styling is seen in pastel palettes by Dior and Alberta Ferretti on the runway.

NEO COWBOY

The modernized American West is brought to life through patchwork, suede jackets, and denim. Graphic band tees with wide-legged trousers define the new-age cowboy. Look to earthy toned palettes seen at Isabel Marant, Acne Studios, and Dior.

FUNCTIONAL FUTURE

By emphasizing contrast contours, futuristic prints, and easy-tailored clothing, the new consumer is given the opportunity to consider future classics. Fine lines and unfussy details are seen in dusted greens, pale neutrals, and French navy. Boss and Givenchy prove notable for this comfort-driven aesthetic.

LUXE ATHLEISURE

Luxe athleisure dominates track and field, from sweatshirts and cycle shorts to rib cuts and jersey shirts in colors Preppy Red, AI Aqua, or Blush Pink. Key runway designers include Miu Miu and Balenciaga.

FEMININE EASE

Ruffles and lace in florals, alongside delicate sheers, become the baseline for occasion and ease of wear. Full volume dresses, puffed sleeves, and sheer silks in watercolor tints, Soap Nut, and Silver Green uplift consumers. Intimates-inspired clothing provides a new understanding of sexy dressing. Notable designers include Ulia Johnson and Molly Goddard.

TIME AFTER TIME

Calming tones Indigo Bunting and Spirulina emerge to create cross-generational, timeless clothing. These forever pieces are translated in neutral and earthy tones, incorporating nature-like textures and monotone styling. Look to Jil Sander and Giada for this streamlined appeal.

SEABREEZE

Uplifting colors, vibrant patterns, and an overwhelming sense of optimism create a nautical theme, catapulting consumers into an escapist summer. Underwater patterns are seen in Pale Lime, Hyper Pink, and AI Aqua. Voluminous shapes, statement cutwork, and relaxed separates are seen at Jason Wu, Valentino, and Dries Van Noten.

STAYCATION

Renewed love for the outdoors inspires a capsule of comfort through throw-on dressing. Terracotta, Mango Sorbet and Bark are seen in nature-inspired prints, checks, and monochrome stripes. The femme jumpsuit dictates the new look of holiday seen at Missing Caption and Ganni.
